MC796790 Microsoft 365 and Microsoft Teams: Unified management of Teams apps in Teams, Outlook, and the Microsoft 365 app Before this rollout, managing Teams apps that work in Outlook and the Microsoft 365 app was fragmented between the Integrated apps page in the Microsoft 365 admin center for Outlook and the Microsoft 365 app, and the Teams admin center for Teams. This sometimes resulted in different settings for the same app in the two admin centers. With Unified App Management, we will be consolidating app catalog management into a single platform. You will be able to manage apps on the Integrated apps page in the Microsoft 365 admin center or in the Teams admin center, and any changes made in either admin center will synchronize.

What you can expect

App catalog enhancements: Apps will start showing hosts where they are available: Teams, Outlook, or the Microsoft 365 app.

Organization-wide settings: App availability default settings will now apply to apps used in Teams, Outlook, and Microsoft 365 app.

App installs: Apps deployed from the Integrated apps page in Microsoft 365 admin center will be preinstalled in all applicable hosts for the app. Unlike app preinstallation in the Teams App setup policy, new app installs will provide access to the preinstalled apps, similar to deploying the app for Outlook and the Microsoft 365 App. [For more details on app deployment, refer to MC795355 Microsoft Teams admin center: App centric management for app installation and changes to app setup policies (May 2024)].

App availability: Managing app availability will apply to all applicable app hosts.

App block/unblock: Blocking or unblocking apps will apply to all applicable app hosts.

Consolidation of existing app settings: All existing app settings will be unified between Integrated apps (MAC) and Manage apps (TAC) pages. Merge rules can be found in Manage apps that work across Teams, Outlook, and Microsoft 365 | Microsoft Learn. These changes cannot be rolled back.

Consolidation report: Phase 2 and 3 tenant administrators will have access to an on-demand report prior to the merging of app settings. This report is designed to help administrators assess the impact of merge rules on their tenant and make any adjustments in advance. We will update this MC post when the report is available.

MC688930 (Updated) Teams admin center: App centric management and changes to app permission policies Updated March 3, 2025: We have updated the rollout timeline below. Thank you for your patience.

The migration to app-centric management using the Migration Wizard (Phase 2) started rolling out in late November 2024 and completed rolling out in mid-December 2024. Administrators are now able to start the migration themselves using the wizard. The automatic migration for customers with only a global permission policy (Phase 1) will complete by end-March 2025 and those with multiple permission policies (Phase 3) will begin in April 2025

Detailed documentation for the migration process is available at App centric management to manage user access to Teams apps - Microsoft Teams | Microsoft Learn.

App centric management introduces new admin settings to control who in the tenant can install Teams apps. First, admins can set a default value for new apps that are published to the Teams app store. Second, admins can manage apps for users, groups, or everyone in the organization. This feature replaces the existing app permission policies and provides admins with the ability to manage access to the app individually. The app permission policies for existing customers are migrated to maintain existing app availability in the tenant.

This message is associated with Microsoft 365 Roadmap ID 151829

[When this will happen:]

This feature will gradually roll out across three major phases.

Phase 1: Auto-migration for only single policy customers - This is applicable for customer with only a global permission policy. The roll-out has started and will be complete by end of March 2025.

Phase 2: Self-migration - admins of our customers can do self-migration using the Migration Wizard. This is the preferred way for customers to have tenant admin to be in the loop of migration. The migration Wizard is available to all customers now till end of March 2025. If you need more time to prepare for self-migration, please reach out to support.

Phase 3: Auto-migration for all customers - This is application for customers who have not completed self-migration in Phase 2. This is targeted to start in April 2025.
Updated March 26, 2025: We have provided additional details about Phase 3 below.

Auto-migration will maintain the same access defined in app permission policies whenever there is no conflict between a user's assigned policies[SD1.1][BN1.2]. If a user's policies conflict by allowing and blocking the same app for them, we will auto-migrate their app as allowed. After auto-migration, there will be a security group created for each set of users assigned to each app permission policy. These groups will be assigned to each app they are allowed in their respective policy, maintaining their app access. Groups Administrators can manage these groups like any others to customize the app centric management assignments, such as adding and removing users, or removing the group and replacing it with another.

MC795355 (Updated) Microsoft Teams admin center: App centric management for app installation and changes to app setup policies Updated February 4, 2025: We have updated the rollout timeline below. Thank you for your patience.

Coming soon for Microsoft Teams: App centric management for admin app installation introduces new admin settings to control who in the tenant has specific Teams apps preinstalled. Similar to app centric management for app availability, as communicated in MC688930 (Updated) Teams admin center: App centric management and changes to app permission policies (November 2023), admins will be able to install apps for users, groups, or everyone in the organization.

After rollout, app centric management will replace Installed apps in the Teams admin center and give admins the ability to install apps individually. The Installed apps in your app setup policies will be migrated to app centric management based on your current user and group assignments for each policy. The rest of your settings in app setup policies will remain unchanged and will continue to work based on app setup policies, including Pinned apps. After this rollout, you can install Teams apps for selected sets of users, groups, or all users in the organization, and Installed apps in app setup policies will no longer be available.

This message is associated with Microsoft 365 Roadmap ID 394274.

[When this will happen:]

App centric management will roll out in four General Availability phases.

Phase 1 | General Availability (Worldwide): We will begin rolling out late July 2024 (previously mid-July) and expect to complete late March 2025 (previously early February) phase applies to tenants who meet both conditions: 1) tenants with no Installed apps in the Global app setup policy and 2) tenants with no custom app setup policies created in the Teams admin center. After rollout, these tenants will have app centric management enabled for their app installs. Admins may see the Manage apps page in read-only mode for a short time.

Phase 2 | More details coming soon as a follow up MC post. MC796790 Microsoft 365 and Microsoft Teams: Unified management of Teams apps in Teams, Outlook, and the Microsoft 365 app Updated December 18, 2024: We have updated the rollout timeline below. Thank you for your patience.

In 2023, we introduced Microsoft Teams apps that are compatible with Microsoft Outlook and the Microsoft 365 App (manifest version v1.13 or higher). Before this rollout, admin changes made in the Integrated apps section of the Microsoft 365 admin center would only affect these Teams apps in Outlook and the Microsoft 365 app. Similarly, changes made in the Teams admin center would exclusively affect Teams. Starting in June 2024, we will roll out Unified App Management to streamline the management of these apps across Teams, Outlook and the Microsoft 365 App, so they are consistently available across all supported clients.

This message is associated with Microsoft 365 Roadmap ID 393931.

[When this will happen:]

This rollout will happen in two major phases. Unified App Management can apply only to tenants that have migrated to app centric management in Teams admin center, as communicated in MC688930 (Updated) Teams admin center: App centric management and changes to app permission policies (November 2023).

Phase 1 | General Availability (Worldwide): We will begin rolling out late-January 2025 (previously mid-December 2024) and expect to complete late March 2025 (previously mid-January 2025). This phase applies to tenants with no modified settings in either the Microsoft 365 admin center (Integrated apps) or the Teams admin center for organization-wide defaults, app deployment, app availability, or block/unblock. No merge rules apply to these tenants, but after this phase, any app management setting configured in either admin centers will apply to all relevant hosts.

Phase 2: We will update this post with a timeline and more details in March 2025. This phase is applicable to tenants with app settings that have differences between Microsoft 365 admin center (Integrated apps) and Teams admin center, and who have maintained a single app setup policy in Teams that has a modified Installed apps section.
Updated March 26, 2025: This change is now on hold, with further guidance to be provided by late April 2025.

MC889534 (Updated) Microsoft Teams: Embed support for Teams town hall Updated February 28, 2025: We have updated the rollout timeline below. Thank you for your patience.

As a part of Team's ongoing effort to enable our customers to create, manage, and run large scale events, end users can now embed Teams town hall in sites they manage. This capability allows town hall attendees to watch the event instance within a particular website.

Embed for town hall introduces embeddable support for town hall engagement features on release. Attendees will have the same engagement feature access within the embed player as they do in client such as Q&A, Captions, Reactions and more.

To implement embed for town hall, organizers can access their town hall events unique embed code from the town hall scheduling template upon publish. Organizers can then take that code and inject it to their SharePoint or Microsoft 365 site as desired. On event start, attendees will be able to view and engage with the embed stream on the published site.

MC994289 (Updated) Microsoft Teams: Microsoft PowerShell cmdlet to allow federation with specific trial tenant domains Updated February 28, 2025: We have updated the rollout timeline below. Thank you for your patience.

Coming soon: We will introduce a new Microsoft Teams PowerShell setting in Tenant Federation Configuration to enable you to customize your federation posture. Tenant administrators will be able to define a list of external trial tenants to be whitelisted for federation, while maintaining the default block on overall federation with trial-only tenants.

[When this will happen:]

General Availability (Worldwide): The new setting is available now in Teams PowerShell. If populated, the allowed trial tenant domains list will start to take effect in mid-March 2025 (previously mid-February).

Note: This feature requires no immediate admin action, and there will be no impact if the list is not populated.
