Direct effects for Operations**

User Experience with Copilot Modes
The introduction of the mode selector without preparation may lead to confusion among users regarding the new options (Auto, Quick response, Think deeper). Users may not understand the implications of each mode, leading to inconsistent usage and dissatisfaction with the tool's performance.

Increased Support Requests
Without prior communication about the new features, helpdesk staff may face an influx of support requests from users who are unsure how to use the new mode selector or who experience unexpected behavior from the Copilot. This could strain IT resources and delay response times for other issues.

Imagine you are at a restaurant with a new menu that offers three dining experiences: Auto, Quick response, and Think deeper. The restaurant, like Microsoft 365 Copilot, has just introduced a new chef, GPT-5, who is known for preparing meals with precision and speed.

In the Auto mode, you trust the chef to decide how much time to spend on your meal. If the dish is simple, it comes out quickly. If it's more complex, the chef takes a bit longer to ensure it's perfect. This is like letting Copilot decide how much reasoning to apply to your queries, balancing speed and depth as needed.

The Quick response mode is like ordering a quick snack. You want something fast, and the chef delivers immediately, sacrificing a bit of complexity for speed. Similarly, in this mode, Copilot provides rapid answers, ideal for straightforward questions where speed is more important than depth.

Finally, the Think deeper mode is akin to ordering a gourmet meal that requires more time and attention. The chef takes longer to prepare it, ensuring every detail is perfect. In this mode, Copilot takes extra time to provide a more thorough and well-reasoned response, suitable for complex inquiries.

Starting December 3, 2025, all users of Microsoft 365 Copilot will see this new "menu" of options, with Auto being the default setting. This change doesn't require any adjustments from administrators, and users' preferences will be remembered for future interactions. It's like having your favorite dining experience remembered each time you visit the restaurant. This update aims to enhance user experience by offering flexibility in how information is processed and delivered, much like choosing how you want your meal prepared.
