Introduction
In early November, we announced voice in the Microsoft 365 Copilot mobile app. Now we're expanding that offering to Microsoft 365 Copilot app on desktop and the web, as well as in the Microsoft 365 apps, starting with Word and PowerPoint on desktop and web and Outlook on desktop, web, and mobile.
Voice enables Microsoft 365 Copilot users to have natural, back-and-forth conversations with Copilot simply by speaking. It lets you quickly capture your ideas, whether you're brainstorming, drafting a response, or preparing for a meeting. Just say "help me prepare for my next meeting" to get an instant response from Work IQ, grounded in your work data, context, and preferences.

Microsoft 365 Copilot is introducing a new feature that allows users to interact with their apps using voice chat. Imagine it like having a conversation with a smart assistant, similar to talking to Siri or Alexa, but specifically tailored for your work needs within Microsoft 365 apps like Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook. This feature will be available across desktop, web, and mobile platforms, starting from November 2025 and completing its rollout by January 2026.
Think of it as having a personal assistant who can help you organize your thoughts, draft emails, or prepare for meetings just by speaking to it. For instance, if you're preparing for a meeting, you can simply say, "Help me prepare for my next meeting," and Copilot will use your work data and preferences to assist you. This is similar to having a conversation with a colleague who knows your work style and can provide personalized support.
The voice chat feature is designed to be intuitive and easy to use. Users can start a voice conversation by selecting the option in the Copilot input box. Once initiated, you can have a natural back-and-forth conversation with Copilot, and it will store the conversation transcripts securely, just like it does with text conversations. It's important to note that there is no option for administrators to disable this feature, so it will be available to all licensed users.
In terms of privacy and security, Microsoft has ensured that the data is protected and managed according to their standards. Users can continue their voice chat even while switching between apps or when the screen is locked, although audio from other apps will interrupt the voice chat. The feature also includes background noise suppression to enhance clarity, although some background speech might still be picked up.
Overall, this new voice chat capability in Microsoft 365 Copilot aims to make your interaction with Microsoft apps more seamless and efficient, turning them into a thought partner that understands your work context and helps you get things done more effectively.
