Summary:
Microsoft is rolling out the no-cost Microsoft Entra ID Free subscription to track Entra tenant ownership via billing accounts. It will appear in Microsoft 365 and Azure portals starting October, requires no action, does not affect billing or functionality, and helps manage tenant ownership securely.

Details:
We're pleased to announce the rollout of the Microsoft Entra ID Free subscription, an initiative designed to enhance Microsoft's service offerings and improve your experience with Microsoft.
What is Microsoft Entra ID Free?
Microsoft Entra ID Free is a no-cost subscription that represents the Entra Tenant you own and use to access Microsoft products and services. Over the coming weeks, this subscription will appear under Billing > Your Products in the Microsoft 365 Admin Center, and Cost Management + Billing > Products + services > All billing subscriptions in the Microsoft Azure portal. This subscription cannot be modified or deleted while you're an active customer with Microsoft.
No action is required from you.
Why are we doing this?
As part of Microsoft's Secure Future Initiative, we're improving how ownership of Microsoft Entra tenants is tracked. By linking tenant ownership to a Microsoft billing account, customers can clearly see which tenants they own. The Microsoft Entra ID Free subscription will manage new tenants under the same billing account, helping customers keep an inventory and prove ownership if administrative access is lost.
If you have questions or need help, contact support.
[When this will happen:]
General Availability (Worldwide): The rollout is scheduled to begin early to mid-October and will be completed over phases.

Microsoft is introducing a new feature called Microsoft Entra ID Free, which is a no-cost subscription aimed at helping you keep track of the ownership of your Microsoft Entra tenants. Think of it like a free digital receipt that shows which Microsoft services you own and use. This subscription will automatically appear in your Microsoft 365 Admin Center and Azure portal, and you don’t need to do anything to set it up.

Imagine you have a collection of keys, each representing access to different rooms in a building. The Microsoft Entra ID Free subscription acts like a keychain that keeps all your keys organized and labeled, so you know exactly which keys you have and what they open. This helps ensure that if you ever misplace a key or forget which room it opens, you have a clear record to refer back to.

The main purpose of this feature is to improve security and management by linking your tenant ownership to your billing account. This way, you can easily verify which tenants you own, making it simpler to manage your services and maintain control over them. If you ever lose administrative access, this subscription helps prove ownership, much like having a spare key or a receipt for a purchase.

This change is part of Microsoft's efforts to enhance security and streamline management for its users. The rollout will happen in phases starting in October, and it won’t affect your billing or the way your current services function. You don’t need to take any action, but if you have questions or need assistance, Microsoft support is available to help.
