Summary:
Starting July 2025, Teams Calling global policy will enable recording and transcription by default for new tenants and those without customized policies. This change aligns with Teams meetings policies and enhances access to AI-powered features. Existing custom or modified policies remain unaffected. No admin action is required before the rollout.
Details:
We're updating the default global calling policy for new tenants to allow users to transcribe or record calls. Previously, these settings were turned off by default in the host global policy. With this update, recording and transcription will be enabled by default in the global calling policy for new tenants and existing tenants who have not modified the host global policy. This change will not impact existing custom policies or modified global policies. After this rollout, recording and transcription services will be more accessible to users, allowing them to turn on and use recording and transcription as needed during Teams calls. Neither recording nor transcription will be automatically enabled in Teams calls.
Important: This change will not impact existing custom or modified global policies.
This update is designed to broaden access to AI-powered features like Calls Recap and Calling Copilot, enhancing the overall calling experience. It also brings calling policy defaults in line with Teams meetings policies, where recording and transcription are already enabled by default.
[When this will happen:]
Starting July 2025, we're changing the following:
New tenants and tenants without customized Teams calling policies: The new default will apply automatically, allowing call recording and transcription.
Tenants with customized global or custom Teams calling policies: Any policy customizations will remain in place and will not be affected.

Starting in July 2025, Microsoft Teams will update its global calling policy to enable recording and transcription by default for new users and those who haven't customized their settings. Think of this change like a new car that comes with built-in GPS and a backup camera. These features are ready to use right away, but you can choose to turn them off if you prefer.
Previously, these settings were off by default, meaning users had to manually enable them if they wanted to record or transcribe calls. With the new policy, these features will be readily available, similar to how modern cars come with automatic headlights that turn on when it gets dark. You don’t have to do anything extra to use them, but you have the option to adjust them to your liking.
This change won't affect anyone who has already customized their settings. It's like having a personalized playlist on your music app; if you've set it up the way you like, it won't be altered by a general update. However, for those who haven't made any changes, the default settings will now include these helpful features.
The update is designed to make AI-powered tools like Calls Recap and Calling Copilot more accessible, enhancing the calling experience. It aligns with existing Teams meetings policies, where recording and transcription are already enabled by default. Just as your smartphone might automatically update its software to give you access to the latest features, this change will happen automatically, requiring no action from administrators beforehand. However, it might be a good idea to inform your team about these updates and adjust any internal documentation as needed.
