Imagine you have a filing cabinet system in your office where each cabinet represents a different department or team. Each cabinet has a label indicating which department it belongs to, like "Legal," "HR," or "Finance." Now, inside each cabinet, there are drawers for various types of documents, and each drawer can also have its own label, like "Contracts," "Employee Records," or "Budgets."

In the digital world, Microsoft Purview's compliance portal was set to introduce a feature that would work similarly. The idea was to automatically apply a label to all documents in a digital library based on the label of the container, such as a group, site, or team. So, if you had a SharePoint site labeled "HR," any new or edited documents in that site's library would automatically get the "HR" label, much like how all drawers in the "HR" cabinet would be associated with HR-related documents.

However, if you had already set specific labels for certain drawers (or document libraries), this new feature wouldn't change those. It would respect the existing setup, much like how you wouldn't relabel a drawer that's already marked for "Employee Records" just because the cabinet is labeled "HR."

Unfortunately, this feature has been postponed indefinitely and has been canceled, meaning it won't be available for use. So, for now, admins will need to continue managing document labels manually or using existing methods without this automatic inheritance feature.
