Today, there is not a way to remove retention policies or labels (called a hold in Exchange) from items in inactive mailboxes in bulk. Now we are introducing a PowerShell cmdlet that enables retention policies or labels to be removed in bulk from these items. This removal will not affect legal holds.

Imagine you have a storage room filled with boxes, each labeled with a tag indicating how long they should be kept before being thrown away. These labels help you manage the room by ensuring you only keep what's necessary for the right amount of time. Now, let's say some of these boxes belong to people who no longer work at your company, and you want to clear them out to make space for new items.
Previously, you had to go through each box individually to remove these labels, which was time-consuming and inefficient. But now, imagine you have a magic tool that allows you to remove these labels from multiple boxes at once, without affecting any boxes that are legally required to stay. This tool makes it much easier to manage your storage room and keep it organized.
In the IT world, Microsoft has introduced a similar tool for managing email data. When employees leave a company, their email accounts become inactive, but the data still needs to be managed according to retention policies. These policies act like the labels on the boxes, indicating how long the data should be kept. The new PowerShell cmdlet is like the magic tool, allowing IT staff to remove these retention policies in bulk from inactive mailboxes, streamlining the process and saving time. Importantly, this tool does not affect any data that is under legal hold, ensuring compliance with legal requirements.
This update is particularly useful for organizations using Microsoft Purview, as it helps maintain an efficient and compliant data management system.
