Summary:
Microsoft Teams is updating UDP signaling ports for Calling and Meetings to enhance efficiency. The source ports will change from 49152-65535 to 50070-50089, with the destination UDP port remaining at 3478. Rollout begins early October 2024. Admins should allow the new UDP source ports to the specified destination ports.

Details:
Coming soon: To enhance the efficiency of Microsoft Teams, we will implement a significant update to the UDP signaling ports used for Calling and Meetings.
Before this rollout, Teams uses UDP Source Ports 49152-65535 for Calling and Meetings signaling API Calls. This includes functionality such as mute/unmute, hold, adding participants, and reactions.
After this rollout, Teams will transition UDP signaling from source ports 49152-65535 to 50070-50089, maintaining the destination UDP port 3478. This change aims to reduce the number of ports used and enable you to apply Quality of Service (QoS) DSCP markers to this traffic.
When this will happen: General Availability (Worldwide): We will begin rolling out early October 2024 and expect to complete by early October 2024.

summary for non-techies**

Starting in early October 2024, Microsoft Teams will narrow its signaling port range from 49152-65535 to 50070-50089, while still directing traffic to port 3478, and Outlook on the web will allow users to choose between bold and light colors for calendar events.

Direct effects for Operations**

UDP Signaling Ports Change
If the change is implemented without proper preparation, users may experience disruptions in calling and meeting functionalities such as mute/unmute, hold, and adding participants due to blocked ports.

Quality of Service (QoS) Implementation
Without prior adjustments, the new UDP ports may not be recognized by existing network configurations, leading to degraded call quality and increased latency during Teams meetings.

Opportunities**

Enhanced Quality of Service (QoS) Implementation
The change in UDP signaling ports allows for better application of Quality of Service (QoS) DSCP markers. This can lead to improved call quality and reduced latency during Teams meetings and calls, enhancing user experience significantly.
   - next-steps: Conduct training sessions for IT staff on QoS configuration and monitoring. Review current QoS settings to align with the new port configurations.
   - roles: IT Administrators, Network Engineers, Help Desk Support

Simplified Firewall Management
With the reduction in the number of UDP ports from 49152-65535 to 50070-50089, firewall management becomes simpler and more efficient. This could lead to reduced administrative overhead and potential for fewer configuration errors.
   - next-steps: Update firewall rules to reflect the new port configurations and document the changes for future reference. Schedule a review of firewall settings post-implementation to ensure compliance.
   - roles: Network Security Administrators, IT Compliance Officers

Improved User Training and Documentation
As the configuration changes may impact user experience, providing updated training and documentation will help users adapt to any new features or improvements in Teams functionality, ensuring they can utilize the platform effectively.
   - next-steps: Develop updated training materials and conduct training sessions for end-users focusing on the new features and enhancements in Teams. Gather feedback to continuously improve training resources.
   - roles: Training Coordinators, IT Support Staff, End Users
