Details:

Summary:
Microsoft Teams group chat agents and bots will support Entra authentication starting November 3-6, 2025. Users without the Teams app or Entra consent receive a private prompt to install the app and grant permissions. This feature is enabled by default, requiring no admin action.

Details:
Agents and bots in Microsoft Teams group chats will now be able to authenticate through Entra. When an app requests a user's Entra token in a group chat, if that user does not have the Teams app installed and/or has not granted Entra consent, they are sent a targeted message. This targeted message is only visible to that user and serves two purposes: to prompt the user to install the Teams app and to open the Entra permission consent dialog. Once both requirements are met, the app can leverage Entra for the requested permissions (such as Graph).
This message is associated with Microsoft 365 Roadmap ID 503557.
[When this will happen:]
General Availability (Worldwide): Begins November 3, 2025, and completes by November 6, 2025
General Availability (GCC): Begins and completes November 6, 2025.

explanation for non-techies**

Microsoft Teams is introducing a new feature that allows agents and bots in group chats to authenticate using Entra, a system that helps manage user permissions and access. Think of Entra as a digital doorman that ensures only the right people have access to certain areas or information. Previously, this authentication was only possible in one-on-one chats, but now it will be available in group settings as well.

Imagine you're at a private event, and there's a special section only accessible to those with a VIP badge. If you don't have the badge, a friendly staff member approaches you, explains the benefits of the VIP section, and helps you get the badge. Similarly, if a user in a group chat doesn't have the Teams app installed or hasn't given Entra permission, they will receive a private message prompting them to do so. This message is like the staff member's gentle nudge, ensuring you have what you need to access the special section.

This change is set to roll out between November 3 and November 6, 2025, and will be automatically enabled, meaning no action is required from administrators. It's designed to make the process smoother for users interacting with bots or agents in group chats, allowing these apps to request necessary permissions seamlessly.

If any issues arise with bots or agents related to Entra authentication after this update, it's advisable to contact the application developer. Some apps might need to adjust their logic to work correctly in group chats, similar to how they function in one-on-one interactions.

For those concerned about compliance, no specific considerations have been identified, but it's always a good idea to review these changes in the context of your organization's policies. This update aims to enhance the user experience by simplifying how permissions are managed in group chat environments.
