Details:
We released a new dynamic rules option in April 2025 for creating backup policies for Microsoft OneDrive, Microsoft SharePoint, and Microsoft Exchange Online. With dynamic rules, backup policies are based on distribution lists and security group memberships to reduce manual effort and minimize the risk of users being left unprotected. Any changes to group membership are automatically reevaluated daily, ensuring the policy stays up to date with the latest membership changes.

summary for non-techies**
Microsoft 365 has introduced dynamic rules for its Backup feature, which automatically updates backup policies based on changes in distribution lists and security group memberships, ensuring data is always current without manual intervention.
Direct effects for Operations**
Backup Policy Automation
The automatic implementation of dynamic rules for backup policies may lead to unintended data loss if distribution lists and security groups are not accurately maintained, resulting in users not being backed up as expected.
