MC804771 (Updated) Microsoft Teams: Hiding inactive channels Before this rollout: Users had to manually hide inactive channels.

After this rollout: Teams will hide channels that have been inactive and notify the user with the message, "We're hiding some inactive channels for you." The user can select View changes to see the details (second screenshot):

The user can keep the channels hidden or show them again:

To initiate or stop channel hiding, go to Teams > Settings > Chats and channels > Hide inactive channels:

This feature is on by default and all Teams users on the affected platforms will have access to it.

Before this rollout: Users had to manually manage their relevant channels list by hiding inactive and irrelevant channels.

After this rollout:

Manage preferences for automated hiding via Teams Settings

If users prefer to manage channels manually, they can opt out of the auto-hiding process. Simply go to Teams settings, select General, and toggle off "Hide Inactive Channels."

Hide inactive channels on demand when needed

Users can manually view which channels are inactive and choose to hide some or all of them whenever you need. This can be done from Settings, under General, by clicking the "Hide Now" button. Note that this action can be performed once every 24 hours.

Automated hiding of inactive channels

With this, Teams will hide channels that have been inactive for the user. Inactive channels are identified based on the following criteria: if the user has not been active in the channel in the last 120 days - meaning there is no new messaging in the channel that the user has read or reacted to - the channel is considered inactive. Once the inactive channels are identified, the user is notified with the coach mark message, "We're hiding some inactive channels for you."

The user can select View changes to see the details. The user can keep the channels hidden or show them again.

If a user has less than or equal to 25 shown channels, no channels will be hidden for that user.

MC688930 (Updated) Teams admin center: App centric management and changes to app permission policies Updated October 24, 2024: The migration to app-centric management using the Migration Wizard (referenced as Phase 2 in this post) is expected to resume by mid-November 2024. At that time, administrators will be able to self-initiate the migration using the wizard. The automatic migration for customers with only a global permission policy (Phase 1) and those with multiple permission policies (Phase 3) will be postponed until early 2025. Further updates, including the details for Phase 3 auto-migration, will be provided in a future MC post update and public documentation.

App centric management (ACM) is on hold as of August 14, 2024, and will restart in mid-October (previously mid-September). Your experience during this hold will fall under one of the following, with Phases defined in detail below.

If your tenant has already been migrated to ACM, it will remain on ACM. The rest of this MC post is not applicable to your tenant.

If your tenant fell under the Phase 1 criteria of using only the Global app permission policy and no custom app permission policies, it will resume auto migration in mid-September.

If you do not have a draft currently saved, you will not be able to access ACM migration until the roll out restarts.

What is in Phase 2?

Migration wizard: a step-by-step guide to help you migrate the permission policies. You will be able to select which polities to migrate and designate users groups or individuals who should have access to the apps.

Testing and Validation: before finalizing the migration, you will have the opportunity to test and export your staged changes. You can use this to make side-by-side comparison with your current setup, ensuring everything is perfect before you proceed.

Duration: The migration process is designed to have no downtime for the end users and can take a few hours to complete. During the migration, your existing permission policies will remain in effect until the transition to app centric management completes.

Detailed documentation for the migration process is available at App centric management to manage user access to Teams apps - Microsoft Teams | Microsoft Learn.

App centric management introduces new admin settings to control who in the tenant can install Teams apps. First, admins can set a default value for new apps that are published to the Teams app store. Second, admins can manage apps for users, groups, or everyone in the organization. This feature replaces the existing app permission policies and provides admins with the ability to manage access to the app individually. The app permission policies for existing customers are migrated to maintain existing app availability in the tenant.

This message is associated with Microsoft 365 Roadmap ID 151829

[When this will happen:]

This feature will gradually roll out across three major phases.

Phase 1 (from late November 2023 to early November 2024 (previously late September) affects the tenants that use only the Global app permission policy and have no custom app permission policies. The app status from the permission policy and tenant settings will be migrated to preserve the admin intent. The migration will not affect the end users and their ability to use the apps. Admins may see the Manage apps page in a read-only mode for a short time.

Phase 2 (from late May 2024 to early November 2024 (previously late September)) affects the tenants that use both global and custom app permission policies. This phase will let the admin choose to migrate to app centric management by following a migration process that will change the existing app permission policies to app assignments in the new app centric model. The admins will have the choice to modify the apps that are assigned using the custom permission policies to be accessible to groups, if they want.

Phase 3 (early 2025) applies to the tenants that skipped the migration in phase 1 or 2. These tenants will be migrated automatically in this phase. More details to come as a follow up MC post.

Updated November 12, 2024: The migration to app-centric management using the Migration Wizard (referenced as Phase 2 in this post) is expected to resume by late-November 2024 and complete the roll out by mid-December 2024. MC695487 (Updated) Contact Unification across Outlook and Teams Updated May 23, 2024: We are working on a few changes to the system, and the current Message center post will be updated soon to reflect the latest plan and timelines. In the interim, we have completed one time migration of Teams, contacts to outlook contact store but any changes in Outlook will not reflect in Teams and vice versa. This will be enabled in next steps for this effort. Please stay tuned for further updates on this via the message center post.

Today, users can see Outlook contacts created with their Entra ID (AAD) account in Teams, but contacts created in Teams are not available in Outlook. To provide a consistent experience we are making changes to allow Teams contacts, created with a user's Entra ID (AAD) account, to be visible in Outlook as well.

[When this will happen:]

We will provide updates when we are ready to proceed.
Updated November 12, 2024: We have updated the content and rollout timeline below. Thank you for your patience.

Upcoming changes to contacts in Teams and Outlook:

Currently, Teams and Outlook maintain separate contact lists for enterprise users. Based on your feedback, we plan to introduce a unified contact experience, ensuring a consistent contacts experience across Outlook and Teams. In future, changes to contacts in users' organization (Entra ID) account in Teams will reflect in Outlook and vice versa.

What's Happened so far:

We have completed one round of migration of all Teams contacts to Outlook in January 2024.

As a result, users may see more contacts in Outlook, namely those created in Teams and potentially Skype for Business contacts (if enabled).

Existing Outlook contacts may also be enriched with additional details from corresponding Teams contacts.

Teams users can see Outlook contacts but cannot edit them inside Teams.

What's Coming:

Users will gradually upgrade to the new unified experience from December 2024. The new experience will be enabled for each user across all endpoints (Desktop, Mobile, Devices etc.) simultaneously. Once the new experience is enabled for a user, they will see same set of contacts in Outlook and Teams. Any change in Outlook will reflect in Teams and vice versa.

All Teams contact changes (creations and edits) made since January will be included in the unified store. During creations, a small set of users may see duplicate contacts in the unified store. To help users navigate the transition, category label 'Teams Conflict' will be applied to duplicate contacts. This label will help users see any conflicts (duplicates or inconsistencies) that need their attention.

[When this will happen:]

This activity is expected to be completed for all active users by April 2025 tentatively. Once this activity is complete, users will work with a single contact list across Teams and Outlook.

MC787382 (Updated) Exchange Online to introduce External Recipient Rate Limit Updated May 31, 2024: We have made the decision to not proceed with this change for DoD or GCC High organizations at this time. We will communicate via Message center when we are ready to proceed.

Today, we are announcing that, beginning in January 2025, Exchange Online will begin enforcing an external recipient rate limit of 2000 recipients in 24 hours.

Exchange Online does not support bulk or high-volume transactional email. We have not enforced limiting of bulk email until now, but we plan on doing so with the introduction of an External Recipient Rate (ERR) limit. The ERR limit is being introduced to help reduce unfair usage and abuse of Exchange Online resources.

[When this will happen:]

The new ERR limit will be introduced in 2 phases:

Phase 1 - Starting January 1, 2025, the limit will apply to cloud-hosted mailboxes of all newly created tenants.

Phase 2 - Between July and December 2025, we will start applying the limit to cloud-hosted mailboxes of existing tenants.
Updated November 15, 2024: We have made the decision to not proceed with this change for DoD, GCC, or GCC High organizations at this time. We will communicate via Message center when we are ready to proceed. The External Recipient Rate Limit will only apply to WWMT/Production.

Users with Teams Premium will have access to additional features in the Microsoft Places app:

Team Guidance for leaders to communicate which days their team should plan to be in the office and what the priorities are for each in-office day. MC928016 (Updated) Microsoft Viva Engage: Unregistered users in an external network will not receive community emails When an external network participant is invited to join a Microsoft Viva Engage external network, they receive an invitation email with an option to accept. An E5 license is required to use this feature.

After this change, pending or inactive users will no longer receive community conversations or emails unless they accept the invitation and complete the registration process. This change prioritizes active engagement, ensuring only registered users access conversation updates and reducing the volume of emails sent to non-registered users. We will begin rolling out this change early December 2024 and expected to complete by early January 2025. Extensions will not be provided for this configuration change.
